Costa Rica gives a team something most US destinations can't: rainforest, volcanoes, Pacific beaches and hot springs, all within one trip and only a few hours' flight from many US hubs. For a company retreat, it works best as a four- or five-night program that mixes working mornings with adventure in the afternoons. The country's tourism industry is built around nature and sustainability, which suits teams that want an offsite to feel different from a city hotel.
Below are the main corporate retreat locations in Costa Rica, with what each is best for, the group sizes that work, the style of venue and the best months. Travel times are approximate and road conditions vary, especially in the rainy season.
Where to hold a corporate retreat in Costa Rica
Guanacaste and the Papagayo Peninsula
Best for: incentive trips, leadership retreats and team offsites that want a polished beach resort with conference space. Group size: 15 to 300. Venue type: large luxury resorts on the Papagayo Peninsula and around Culebra Bay, plus villa compounds for smaller groups. Season: December to April is the dry season and the most reliable weather in the country. Getting there: about 25 to 40 minutes by car from Liberia's international airport (LIR), which has nonstop flights from a number of US hubs in peak season.
Tamarindo and the Nicoya beach towns
Best for: casual team retreats built around surf lessons, sunset catamaran sails and a relaxed beach-town feel. Group size: 10 to 120. Venue type: boutique hotels, beach resorts and large rental villas in Tamarindo, with smaller wellness-focused properties farther south toward Nosara. Season: December to April. Getting there: roughly 1 to 1.25 hours by car from Liberia to Tamarindo; Nosara is a longer drive, often 2.5 hours or more.
Arenal and La Fortuna
Best for: adventure-focused offsites with zip-lining, hanging bridges, waterfall hikes, rafting and hot springs below the Arenal Volcano. Group size: 10 to 150. Venue type: rainforest lodges and hot-spring resorts, many with volcano views and meeting rooms. Season: February to April is driest; rain is possible year-round, and the lush green is part of the appeal. Getting there: about 3 hours by car from either San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR).
Manuel Antonio and the Central Pacific
Best for: team retreats that want rainforest and beach in one place, with wildlife spotting in the national park. Group size: 10 to 150. Venue type: hillside hotels overlooking the ocean, eco-lodges and boutique resorts near Quepos. Season: December to April for drier weather. Getting there: roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours by car from San José, or a short domestic flight to Quepos.
San José and the Central Valley
Best for: the working portion of a split program, or a shorter offsite with coffee farm tours and volcano day trips. Group size: 20 to 400. Venue type: city and airport-area hotels with large ballrooms, plus coffee-estate and countryside boutique hotels. Season: year-round, with the dry season from December to April. Getting there: about 20 to 40 minutes from SJO to most hotels, depending on traffic.
Monteverde
Best for: small leadership groups who want cloud forest hikes, cooler air and genuine quiet. Group size: 8 to 50. Venue type: mountain lodges and small eco-hotels. Season: December to April. Getting there: around 3 to 3.5 hours by car from San José or Liberia, partly on winding mountain roads.

Costa Rica seasons, explained
Costa Rica has two seasons rather than four. The dry season, roughly December to April, brings the most sunshine on the Pacific coast and in Guanacaste in particular. It's also peak season, so rates are higher and resorts book early, especially around the holidays and spring break. The green season, roughly May to November, brings afternoon showers, fewer visitors and more availability; mornings are often clear, which suits a schedule with outdoor activities early and sessions in the afternoon. September and October tend to be the wettest months on much of the Pacific side, and that's when some roads get difficult.
For most corporate groups, January through April is the safest window, with late November and early December as good shoulder options.
Planning considerations
- Pick the right airport. Liberia is closest to the Guanacaste beaches; San José is better for Manuel Antonio, the Central Valley and many itineraries that include Arenal.
- Keep transfers manageable. Distances look short on a map but roads are slow. One or two bases for the whole trip beats moving every night.
- Passports. Every attendee needs a valid passport. Check current entry requirements well before booking, especially for team members who aren't US citizens.
- Plan for mixed fitness levels. Offer gentle and adventurous versions of each activity, such as a hanging-bridge walk alongside a zip-line tour.
- Use local guides. Wildlife spotting, rafting and volcano hikes are far better with experienced naturalist guides.
Costa Rica versus other Latin America options
If you're weighing Costa Rica against nearby destinations, the Riviera Maya and Los Cabos offer more nonstop flights and larger resort inventory. Panama City suits a city-plus-islands program, and Puerto Rico avoids passport requirements for US citizens. Costa Rica stands out for teams who want nature and adventure at the center of the trip. Costa Rica corporate retreat FAQ
Where is the best place in Costa Rica for a corporate retreat?
Guanacaste, especially the Papagayo Peninsula, is the most common choice for groups because of its resorts, conference space, dry-season weather and proximity to Liberia's airport.
When is the best time to hold a company retreat in Costa Rica?
The dry season, roughly December to April. Late November and early December can also work well, with fewer crowds before the holiday peak.
How many nights should a Costa Rica retreat be?
Four or five nights is a good length. It allows a travel day on each end, working sessions and time for the activities that make the trip worthwhile.
Can we combine the beach and the rainforest in one trip?
Yes. A split itinerary of Arenal and Guanacaste is popular, though the transfer between them takes about 3 to 4 hours by road, so plan it as a half-day activity.
Do employees need a passport for a Costa Rica retreat?
Yes, every traveler needs a valid passport. Check current entry rules for each nationality on your team, then request your Costa Rica proposal once your dates are set.
