Why Puerto Rico works for a company retreat

For HR and finance teams, Puerto Rico removes a whole category of questions. Because it's a US territory, there are no visas, no passports for US citizens, and no foreign transaction fees. That makes it a strong option when some attendees don't hold passports or when you'd rather avoid international travel rules.

For the team, it simply feels like somewhere else. Old San Juan's colorful streets and Spanish forts, the Condado beachfront and the rainforest of El Yunque give your offsite three very different settings in one trip.

And it's close to the East Coast. From New York or Miami, the flight is shorter than flying to the West Coast.

When to go to Puerto Rico

December through April is the dry high season, with warm days, low humidity and the highest prices. May and early June are a sweet spot for value. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peaking in August to October, so we build flexibility into bookings in those months and watch forecasts closely.

Sample 3-day Puerto Rico offsite itinerary

Day 1: Condado arrival

• Arrivals at San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín airport, about 15 minutes from the hotel
• Check in at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino on Condado Beach
• Beach time, then a welcome dinner along Ashford Avenue

Day 2: Work and Old San Juan

• Working sessions in the resort's event spaces, or at a nearby Regus coworking center
• Late-afternoon guided tour of Old San Juan, including the El Morro and San Cristóbal forts
• Group dinner in the old city's historic streets

Day 3: Rainforest or reef

• Short closing session
• Choose your adventure: hiking and waterfalls in El Yunque National Forest, or a catamaran sail and snorkel trip
• Farewell dinner or afternoon departures

Where teams stay in Puerto Rico

Our sample package uses the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino in the heart of Condado. It's an oceanfront resort with spacious rooms, fitness and wellness facilities and spaces for hosting events. Condado is walkable, has plenty of restaurants and sits a short drive from Old San Juan.

For a quieter, more secluded feel, we can also look at resorts east of San Juan, closer to El Yunque.

• West Coast: usually one connection, around 8 to 10 hours in total

Puerto Rico uses Atlantic Standard Time year-round. That's the same as US Eastern in summer and one hour ahead in winter.

Do employees need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico?
