The Papagayo Peninsula and the bays around it, in Costa Rica's dry northwest province of Guanacaste, are a fit for teams that want a beach retreat with real polish: big resort grounds, calm water for sailing and swimming, and a short ride from the airport. It works best for leadership offsites, sales incentive trips and company retreats of roughly 20 to 200 people.
The one-line case: you land at Liberia and can be at the pool in well under an hour, in the part of Costa Rica with the most reliable sunshine. The trade-off is price. The top resorts here sit at the high end of the market, especially over the winter holidays.
Why Papagayo works for a team offsite
- A short transfer. Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia (LIR) has nonstop flights from a number of major US hubs, with more routes in the winter high season. The peninsula resorts are about 25 to 40 minutes away by road, and Playa Hermosa and Playas del Coco are roughly 25 to 30 minutes.
- Resort and villa options side by side. The gated peninsula holds two ultra-luxury resorts, and the surrounding Gulf of Papagayo coast adds all-inclusive hotels, boutique properties and private villas for smaller groups.
- Room to work. The larger resorts have indoor meeting rooms plus terraces and lawns for breakouts, so a group can run a full morning of sessions without leaving the property.
- Evenings without a commute. Most dinners happen at the resort or on a sunset boat. Playas del Coco has a small strip of bars and seafood restaurants for a casual night out.
- The caveats are cost and wind. Peninsula rates are high year-round, and strong Papagayo winds blow through much of the dry season, which can cancel or reroute boat trips on some afternoons.
Best time for a corporate retreat in Papagayo
The dry season, from about December through April, brings near-daily sun and is when most groups go. It is also the costliest window, and Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa (the week before Easter) are the hardest dates to book. May through August is the green season, with afternoon showers, lower rates and a lusher landscape; many teams find June and July a good value. September and October are the wettest months, and some smaller businesses close for part of that stretch.
Corporate retreat venues in Papagayo
Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo
A long-running luxury resort between two beaches on the peninsula, with a golf course, spa and a meeting and event program that the company says it refreshed in 2026. It suits executive retreats and incentive trips where comfort and service come first.
Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
One of the newest resorts on the peninsula, run under Ritz-Carlton's small Reserve label, with a meetings and weddings program and private villas. It is a good match for a small leadership group or board that wants privacy and a very high level of service.
Riu Palace Costa Rica
A large all-inclusive resort on Playa Matapalo, on the southern side of the gulf, with a groups and events team; its sister property, Riu Guanacaste, sits on the same beach and lists meeting rooms. The all-inclusive format makes budgeting simple for a big sales or all-hands group.
Bosque del Mar
A boutique hotel facing the sea on Playa Hermosa, with suites, a restaurant and an events hall. It works for a mid-size team that wants a quieter beach base and a short drive to the airport.
Villa Buena Onda
A private, all-inclusive villa estate near Playas del Coco that is booked by one group at a time. The site lists eight suites and groups of up to 20, which makes it a strong fit for a founders' retreat or a small leadership team.

- A scuba or snorkel trip from Playas del Coco to the offshore rock islands, where rays and reef fish are common.
- A visit to a working Guanacaste cattle ranch to see the local sabanero (cowboy) traditions, with horseback riding for those who want it.

Budget and planning notes
Season and venue tier are what move the price in Papagayo. The two peninsula resorts carry some of the highest rates in Central America, while the all-inclusive and boutique options along the gulf come in well below them. Holiday weeks and Semana Santa often require minimum stays, private boat charters are priced per vessel, and a group of under 20 can sometimes take a whole villa for the cost of a resort room block. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Share your dates and team size and we will send a free itemized proposal in days, with one upfront price per person, 24/7 remote support during the trip and an optional on-site coordinator. Papagayo corporate retreat FAQs
Where should a team stay around Papagayo?
Stay on the peninsula itself for the most private, full-service resort experience. Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco and Playa Matapalo cost less and put the group closer to restaurants and boat departures.
How far is Papagayo from Liberia airport?
The peninsula resorts are about 25 to 40 minutes from Liberia by road. That short transfer is one of the main reasons groups choose this corner of Costa Rica.
Is the rainy season a bad time for a Papagayo retreat?
Not always. May through August usually brings sunny mornings and afternoon showers at lower rates, but September and October are much wetter and better avoided.
How many days should a Papagayo offsite last?
Three days covers sessions and one big outing. Add a fourth day if you want both a boat trip and a visit to Rincón de la Vieja.
