Company retreats near the San Francisco Bay Area
Done-for-you team offsites with one itemized price per person and a planner on site. Free proposal in 48 hours.
If your company is based in San Francisco, Oakland or anywhere down the Peninsula into San Jose, you have one of the best backyards in the country for an offsite. Within a morning's drive there's wine country, a rugged coastline, redwood forest and Sierra foothill towns. The hard part for a Chief of Staff, EA or People lead isn't finding a pretty place. It's matching the place to the goal, the headcount and the calendar, and getting everyone there without losing a day to traffic.
This guide covers team offsite locations near the Bay Area you can reach by car or chartered bus, then the short flights worth taking when you want a bigger change of scene.
Drive-to options (under ~3 hours)
Drive times below are approximate, measured from downtown San Francisco on a weekday without heavy traffic. Friday afternoon departures across the Bay Bridge or up Highway 101 can add an hour, so we schedule buses for mid-morning.
Napa Valley
Drive: about 1 to 1.5 hours. Good for: leadership strategy sessions by day and a relaxed celebration dinner at night. Best season: spring (bud break, March to May) and late fall after harvest; September and October harvest weekends are busy and expensive. Venue type: wine country inns and resorts with private meeting rooms, plus estate wineries for a buyout dinner. Napa works best for groups of 10 to 60 who want polish without a flight.
Sonoma County and Healdsburg
Drive: roughly 1.5 hours. Good for: smaller planning offsites that want a quieter, less formal feel than Napa. Best season: April through June and October. Venue type: boutique inns around a town square, vineyard estates and farm properties that can be booked whole. Healdsburg's walkable center makes evenings easy without shuttles.
Santa Cruz and the Monterey Peninsula
Drive: about 1.5 hours to Santa Cruz and around 2 to 2.5 hours to Monterey or Carmel. Good for: all-hands celebrations by the beach and engineering offsites that need long, focused working blocks. Best season: September and October, when the summer fog usually clears. Venue type: oceanfront hotels and golf resorts with ballrooms and breakout space. See our Santa Cruz offsite page for a sample itinerary.
Half Moon Bay and the San Mateo coast
Drive: around 45 minutes from the city, less from the Peninsula. Good for: a one- or two-night strategy session when the team can't give up a full travel day. Best season: late summer and fall; winter storms are dramatic but limit outdoor plans. Venue type: clifftop resorts and coastal lodges. It's close enough that people who can't stay overnight can still join for the working day.
Gold Country and the Sierra foothills
Drive: approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to foothill towns such as Murphys or Nevada City. Good for: team-building trips with hiking, river activities and a ranch-style dinner. Best season: spring and fall; summer heat in the foothills can be intense. Venue type: ranches, historic inns and small lodges that groups can take over.
Lake Tahoe gets asked about more than any other option. It's a strong pick for a winter or summer company retreat, but plan on about 3.5 to 4 hours each way, and more on snowy weekends, so treat it as a three-night trip rather than a quick getaway.
Short-flight options
When you want warmer weather, a stronger sense of occasion or a mixed team flying in from other cities, these are the hops we use most from SFO, Oakland and San Jose. Flight times are approximate nonstop times and vary by airline and season.
- Santa Barbara: about 1 hour 15 minutes. Calm, small and very good for executive teams.
- Los Angeles: roughly 1.5 hours. Creative energy and a deep bench of hotels for large groups.
- San Diego: about 1.5 hours. Mild year-round weather and easy airport access.
- Las Vegas: around 1.5 hours. Lots of nonstops for big sales kickoffs.
- Los Cabos: approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. A celebration trip that still feels close.
- Hawaii: about 5.5 hours. Not short, but a single flight from SFO for a milestone year.

What a Bay Area retreat costs
Offsiteio trips typically start around $1,450 per person, flights quoted separately; drive-to retreats avoid airfare entirely. In wine country the big swing factors are the weekend (Tuesday to Thursday is noticeably cheaper than a Friday arrival) and whether you want a full property buyout. For the line items behind a budget, read our corporate retreat cost guide.
How to choose
Start with the goal. If the offsite is about decisions, pick the shortest drive that still feels like leaving the office: Half Moon Bay or Sonoma. If it's about morale after a big year, the coast or a short flight south earns its cost. Then check who's coming. A team split between the city and the South Bay may find Santa Cruz closer than Napa. Our ranked list of the best offsite locations compares these against other US cities, and our step-by-step planning guide covers timeline and roles once you've picked.
Bay Area company retreat FAQs
What is the best corporate retreat location near San Francisco?
For most teams it's Napa or Sonoma for leadership groups and the Santa Cruz or Monterey coast for larger all-hands. Both are reachable in roughly two hours or less and have hotels with real meeting space.
Can we do a Bay Area offsite without anyone flying?
Yes. Every drive-to option here is within about three hours, and a chartered bus from a central pickup point keeps the group together and avoids parking costs.
When should we avoid wine country for an offsite?
Harvest weekends in September and October bring peak rates and crowds. Midweek dates in spring or November give you better availability and pricing.
Is Lake Tahoe too far for a two-night retreat?
It can work, but with around four hours each way you lose most of two days to travel. Three nights is a better format for Tahoe.
How far ahead should we book a team offsite near the Bay Area?
Aim for 10 to 12 weeks for groups under 40 and four to six months for larger teams or peak-season dates in Napa and Monterey.
