Lisbon is usually the shortest hop to Europe for a US team, and one of its best values. We've run Lisbon offsites for software teams, and we keep recommending the city to companies that want an international offsite without a punishing journey. Below: why it works, when to go and a sample three-day plan.
Why Lisbon is a smart choice for an international offsite
Geography does a lot of the work. Lisbon is the westernmost capital in mainland Europe, so East Coast nonstops are among the shortest transatlantic flights you can book. For a distributed company with engineers in Europe and leadership in the US, it's a fair meeting point. Neither side spends a full day in the air.
Then there's cost. Hotels, dinners and activities in Lisbon often cost less than in Paris, London or Barcelona, which lets an international offsite fit a budget closer to a domestic one. The city also has a strong startup community and a steady stream of tech events, so venues know how to set up a workshop room.
Finally, it's a beautiful place to think. Hills, tiled facades, river views and a slower pace give a strategy offsite the change of scenery that makes people look at problems differently.
Best months for a Lisbon offsite
April through June and September through October offer warm days without peak-summer crowds. July and August get hot and busy. Each November, the Web Summit tech conference fills hotels across the city. In mid-June, the Santo António festivities turn the old neighborhoods into a street party. That's either a highlight or a headache, depending on your agenda.
Sample 3-day Lisbon team offsite itinerary
Day 1: Land and slow down
- Morning arrival at Humberto Delgado airport, about 20 minutes from the hotel
- Check in at Sana Malhoa, then an easy afternoon to beat jet lag
- Evening food walking tour through Alfama, Lisbon's oldest neighborhood, ending over petiscos (small plates)
Day 2: Strategy day and a chef's table
- Full day of working sessions in the hotel's meeting rooms, with flexible layouts for plenary and breakouts
- Lunch at the hotel
- Celebration dinner at Alma, chef Henrique Sá Pessoa's restaurant known for modern Portuguese cooking
Day 3: Belém and the river
- Closing session in the morning
- Afternoon in Belém: the 16th-century Belém Tower and a stop for custard tarts
- Optional visit to the Lisbon Oceanarium, one of Europe's largest aquariums, then a farewell dinner
Where teams stay in Lisbon
Our sample package uses Sana Malhoa, a modern hotel in Avenidas Novas with spacious rooms and fully equipped meeting rooms. The neighborhood is practical rather than postcard-pretty. In exchange you get on-site meeting space and quick access to both the airport and the historic center.
For smaller leadership groups, boutique hotels in Chiado or Príncipe Real offer more character. We'll price both so you can choose.
Team activities in Lisbon
- Alfama food walk: narrow lanes, fado drifting from doorways and plenty of tastings. It's the best introduction to the city.
- Belém Tower: a riverside fortress tied to Portugal's maritime history, near other Belém landmarks.
- Lisbon Oceanarium: a calm, absorbing outing that works for every fitness level.
- Day trip to Sintra: palaces in the hills for teams adding an extra day.
What a Lisbon offsite costs
Lisbon starts from $1,500 per person, with flights quoted separately. That puts it on par with our New York package, even before you count the novelty of a European trip. Summer and Web Summit week cost more. Your proposal will itemize each line, and our corporate retreat cost guide covers domestic vs international trade-offs.

Lisbon team offsite FAQs
How much does a team offsite in Lisbon cost?
Our Lisbon package starts from $1,500 per person for lodging, meals, meeting space and activities. Flights are quoted separately.
Is Lisbon a good offsite location for a team split between the US and Europe?
It's one of the best. East Coast nonstops are short by transatlantic standards, and flights from most European cities take a few hours or less.
When is Lisbon most expensive?
July, August and Web Summit week in November usually bring the highest hotel rates. Spring and early fall offer better value and better weather.
Is Lisbon hard to walk for a group?
The historic center is hilly with cobblestone streets. We plan transport between neighborhoods and tell attendees to pack comfortable shoes.
Has Offsiteio run offsites in Lisbon?
Yes. We've planned Lisbon offsites for software teams, and that experience shapes how we plan Lisbon programs today.
