Team building agenda template for offsites and team retreats
Half-day and full-day team building schedules for an offsite, with activities matched to the goal, group sizes, energy levels and a plan for people who'd rather sit out.
A team building agenda turns "let's do something fun together" into a schedule with a goal: connecting new hires, mixing teams that rarely work together, practicing collaboration or simply celebrating. Good team building schedules match each activity to that goal, alternate high and low energy, mix people deliberately and always offer a way to take part for people who can't or won't do the physical option. Below is a free team building agenda template in half-day and full-day versions, with an activity matrix.

How to use this team building agenda
- Write the one goal for the team building time. "Fun" is fine, but say whether it is about connection, mixing teams or collaboration.
- Pick the half-day version alongside working sessions, or the full-day version for a dedicated team day.
- Choose activities from the matrix that match the goal and the group, and check the pre-offsite survey for preferences and limits.
- Plan the groups in advance so teams mix. The random team generator helps.
- Book an inclusive alternative for any physical activity, so nobody has to explain why they are sitting out.
- Keep the reflection block. Twenty minutes connecting the activity to work is what makes it team building rather than an outing.
Example: a team day in Mexico City
An illustrative full day for 24 people from three teams in Mexico City, with connection between teams as the goal.
| Time | Block | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| 09:30 | Icebreaker | Cross-team pairs; three questions each |
| 10:00 | Market and cooking class | Four mixed groups shop at a local market, then cook one course each |
| 13:30 | Lunch | Eat what the groups cooked |
| 15:30 | Trajinera boat ride | Low-intensity; everyone can join |
| 17:30 | Reflection | What made your group work well? What will you take back? |
The boat ride was chosen because the pre-offsite survey showed several people preferred low-intensity options, so the whole group could join one shared experience at the end of the day.
Common team building agenda mistakes
- No goal. Without a goal, you can't pick the activity or tell whether it worked.
- Same-team groups. People drift to who they know. Assign mixed groups.
- Physical activities without an alternative. Exclusion at a team building event defeats the point.
- Back-to-back high energy. Alternate intense blocks with rest and meals.
- Skipping reflection. The lessons stay at the venue unless you name them.

FAQ
What should a team building agenda include?
A clear goal, a welcome, an icebreaker, one or two main activities matched to the goal, breaks and meals, a short reflection that links the activity to work, and social time at the end.
How long should team building activities last?
A half day (about three to four hours) fits alongside working sessions at an offsite. A full day works for a dedicated team day. Individual activities usually run one and a half to two and a half hours.
How do you make team building inclusive?
Ask about preferences and limits in advance, choose low-barrier activities, book a parallel option for anything physical, and design roles so everyone can contribute.
How do you schedule team building at a company offsite?
Put thinking-heavy work sessions in the morning and team building in the afternoon, then a dinner. Avoid scheduling high-energy activities straight after a long travel day.
How big should team building groups be?
Five to eight people per group works for most collaborative activities. Use pairs for icebreakers and bring everyone together only for the opening, the close and meals.
