Siena is a hill city of brick palaces and steep lanes in the middle of Tuscany, built around a fan-shaped square that is one of Italy's great public spaces. It suits leadership retreats, team offsites and client events of about 15 to 150 people who want a walkable historic city as the backdrop, with Chianti and the Crete Senesi countryside on the doorstep.
Our Tuscany guide covers the region's big estates. Siena is the choice when you want a real town at the center of the trip: dinners on foot, a few hundred years of history in every street, and estates as day trips or a second base.
Why Siena works for a team offsite
- Getting there. Florence Airport is roughly an hour and a quarter by road, Pisa about an hour and three quarters, and Rome Fiumicino around two and a half to three hours. Most US teams connect through a European hub or fly nonstop to Rome.
- A compact, car-free core. The old town is closed to most traffic, so the group walks between the hotel, the Campo and dinner. Coaches drop off at the edge of the center.
- City and countryside in one trip. Estates in Chianti and the Crete Senesi are 20 to 45 minutes away, which makes a split program easy.
- Easy evenings. Trattorias and wine bars spread out from the Campo, and a dine-around for a mid-size group needs little planning.
- The caveats. The center is hilly with steep lanes, city hotels are mostly mid-size, and the Palio horse races in July and August fill the town.
Best time for a corporate retreat in Siena
April to June and September to October are the best months, with mild days for walking and countryside outings. The Palio is run on 2 July and 16 August, and the days around each race are crowded and expensive; see it deliberately or avoid it. July and August are hot. Autumn adds the grape and olive harvests, a good theme for food-focused retreats. Winter is quiet, cool and good value, with fewer visitors in the museums and the cathedral.

Budget and planning notes
Siena is usually more affordable than Florence for comparable hotels, though Palio dates, Easter and September weekends push prices up. Estates outside town cost more for exclusive use and add coach transfers, while old-town hotels save on transport but have less meeting space. A contrada dinner or private museum access adds a modest fee. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Give us your dates and we'll assemble a free itemized proposal in days, with one upfront price per person, 24/7 remote support and an optional on-site coordinator. Siena corporate retreat FAQs
When is the Palio, and should we avoid it?
The races are run on 2 July and 16 August. Seeing one is a rare experience for a small group with a planned viewing spot, but most teams should avoid the surrounding days because of crowds and prices.
Should we stay in Siena or at a countryside estate?
Stay in town for walkable evenings and history. Choose an estate for privacy, space and a self-contained program, and visit Siena for a day.
How do we get from Florence to Siena?
By road it takes roughly an hour and a quarter from Florence Airport. Coaches are simplest for groups; buses and trains also run between the two cities.
Is Siena good for larger groups?
Groups up to about 150 can work by using a central hotel for meetings and spreading rooms across nearby properties. Larger meetings fit better at a big estate outside town.
