Shelter Island sits in the bay between Long Island's North and South Forks, reachable only by two short car ferries. Roughly a third of it is a nature preserve, and the rest is quiet roads, small beaches and a handful of inns. It is ideal for leadership teams, founders and small companies of about 8 to 30 people who want true seclusion within reach of New York.
The case for it: once the ferry pulls away, the group is on an island with almost no traffic, few distractions and water on every side. For a bigger team or more nightlife, Greenport and Sag Harbor are each one short ferry ride away.
Why Shelter Island works for a team offsite
- Getting there. The North Ferry links Greenport to the island and the South Ferry links North Haven, next to Sag Harbor; each crossing takes only a few minutes. From Manhattan the drive is roughly two and a half to three hours, and Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip is about an hour away. The LIRR's Greenport station is a short walk from the North Ferry dock.
- Small, waterfront venues. Lodging is a few inns and hotels with event lawns rather than resorts, so a whole-property booking is realistic.
- Good for deep work. There is little to do at night beyond dinner and a walk, which keeps a strategy retreat on task.
- Dinner by ferry. A short crossing turns Greenport or Sag Harbor into an easy evening outing, with transfers timed to the ferry schedule.
- The caveat is capacity and season. Room counts are small, summer books out early, and some places reduce hours or close outside the warmer months.
Best time for a corporate retreat on Shelter Island
June and September are the best months: warm water, long days and far less crowding than July and August. Early October is quiet and often mild. Midsummer weekends are the hardest dates to secure and the most expensive. From November to April the island is very quiet and many businesses keep shorter seasonal hours, so confirm venue opening dates before choosing an off-season slot.
Corporate retreat venues on Shelter Island
The Pridwin Hotel and Cottages
A classic hotel on the water with guest rooms, private cottages, a pool and its own beach, now part of Cape Resorts. It handles meetings and weddings, and suits a team that wants lodging, sessions and beach time in one place.
The Ram's Head Inn
A colonial-style inn on 4.5 landscaped acres with a private beach and moorings, a farm- and sea-to-table restaurant and 13 rooms, according to its site. It is a good size for a leadership retreat that books the whole inn.
Sunset Beach
A small beach hotel with a restaurant and bar from André Balazs Properties, known, as the name suggests, for drinks and dinner as the sun goes down over the water. It does not publish a group program, so treat it as a team lunch or sunset dinner spot, or a small room block, and confirm group bookings directly.
The Menhaden (nearby, Greenport)
A boutique hotel in Greenport village, a short walk from the North Ferry, that hosts conferences and corporate meetings. Use it for overflow rooms or a working session off the island.
Greenporter Hotel (nearby, Greenport)
A relaxed boutique hotel in Greenport with an outdoor pool, a restaurant and meeting space. It works as a second lodging block for teams too big for a single island inn.
Faraway Sag Harbor (nearby, Sag Harbor)
The harborfront hotel formerly known as Baron's Cove, reached via the South Ferry and a short drive. It takes group and event bookings and suits a closing dinner on the South Fork side.

Budget and planning notes
Shelter Island pricing is shaped by the short summer season and the small number of rooms. July and August weekends cost the most and often require multi-night minimums, while June, September and weekday dates open up options. Booking an entire inn is common for groups and is priced as a buyout. Ferry fares are small but timing matters for coaches and dinner reservations. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Share your dates and we will get you a free itemized proposal in days, with one upfront price per person, 24/7 remote support and an optional on-site coordinator. Shelter Island corporate retreat FAQs
How do you get to Shelter Island?
By car ferry: the North Ferry from Greenport or the South Ferry from North Haven near Sag Harbor. Each crossing is short, and both run frequently through the day.
How big a group can Shelter Island take?
It is best for roughly 8 to 30 people. Larger teams usually split lodging between the island and Greenport or Sag Harbor.
Is Shelter Island open in the off-season?
Partly. Some inns and restaurants keep shorter seasonal hours, so check each venue's opening dates before booking from late fall to spring.
How many nights should we plan?
Two nights works for most groups; the ferry and drive make a one-night trip feel rushed.
