Corporate retreat on Sanibel and Captiva: venues, activities and a 3-day plan

Done-for-you team offsites with one itemized price per person and 24/7 remote support. Free proposal in days.

Sanibel and Captiva are two connected barrier islands off Florida's Gulf Coast, reached by a causeway from Fort Myers. They suit teams of about 15 to 120 planning a reward trip, a leadership retreat or a calm winter offsite built around beaches, wildlife and sunsets rather than nightlife.

The islands are low-rise and nature-first: a large wildlife refuge, miles of bike paths and some of the best shelling beaches in the country. Hurricane Ian hit hard in 2022, and the main resorts have since rebuilt and reopened, many with refreshed rooms and event spaces. Confirm current status with each property when you book.

Why Sanibel and Captiva work for a team offsite

  • A big airport nearby. Southwest Florida International in Fort Myers has nonstop flights from many US cities, especially in winter. The drive to Sanibel is roughly 40 to 50 minutes, and to the north end of Captiva about an hour or a little more.
  • Resorts that run groups. Gulf-front resorts on both islands have meeting venues and corporate event programs.
  • Built-in downtime. Bike paths, beaches and the refuge mean free afternoons fill themselves without buses.
  • Sunset dinners. Captiva's west-facing beaches make an evening reception almost effortless.
  • Know the caveats. Causeway and island traffic can be slow in high season, summer is hot and humid with daily storms, and hurricane season runs June through November.

Best time for a corporate retreat on Sanibel and Captiva

January through April is peak season, with dry, warm days and the highest rates; book early. November, December and May offer good weather at lower prices and are often the best value. June through September is hot, humid and stormy, and falls within hurricane season, so programs need indoor backups and flexible plans. Occasional red tide or seaweed events can affect beaches, so keep an eye on local conditions close to the trip.

Getting around takes some planning. There is one causeway onto Sanibel and one road up to Captiva, and in peak months both can move slowly in the late afternoon. Schedule group transfers outside those hours, keep activities close to the resort and lean on bikes for short trips. Many teams split the trip between the islands: they sleep and meet at one resort and use the other island for a dinner or a boat departure. If you need a city day or a large convention room, Fort Myers is on the far side of the causeway.

Budget and planning notes

Season drives the budget on the islands: winter and spring rates are high and resorts set minimum stays, while late fall and May are much easier on cost. Transfers from the airport are longer than on the mainland, so price group shuttles carefully, and a full buyout of the largest resort only makes sense for big incentive groups. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately.
