Corporate retreat locations in Iceland

Done-for-you team offsites with one itemized price per person and 24/7 remote support. Free proposal in days.

Iceland is the offsite people still talk about a year later: lava fields, glaciers, black-sand beaches, geothermal pools and, in winter, a real chance of northern lights. For US companies it is also closer than it looks, with nonstop flights from many East Coast and Midwest cities. It suits teams of 10 to 150 that want a shared adventure and are happy to trade beach weather for drama.

Below are six corporate retreat locations in Iceland, with what each is best for, group sizes, venue types and seasons. Drive times are estimates for good conditions; winter weather can stretch them.

Where to hold a corporate retreat in Iceland

Reykjavik

Best for: working retreats that need proper meeting rooms, plus restaurants, bars and day trips from one base. Group size: 15 to 300. Venue type: modern city hotels, a harbor-front concert and conference hall, and design hotels near the old harbor. Season: year-round; June to August for long days, September to March for aurora tours. Getting there: about 45 minutes by car or airport bus from Keflavík International. Our Reykjavik retreat guide covers venues and a 3-day plan.

Golden Circle: Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss

Best for: leadership retreats and small teams that want countryside quiet with famous sights a short drive away. Group size: 10 to 100. Venue type: countryside hotels, lodges with hot tubs and private cabin clusters. Season: year-round. Getting there: roughly 45 minutes to 1.5 hours by car from Reykjavik, depending on the stop.

Reykjanes Peninsula

Best for: short offsites, wellness-focused programs and teams arriving on overnight flights who want to rest before the agenda starts. Group size: 10 to 80. Venue type: spa hotels set in lava fields and small hotels near the coast. Season: year-round. Getting there: about 20 minutes by car from Keflavík, which makes it ideal for a first or last night.

The South Coast: Selfoss, Hella and Vík

Best for: adventure offsites with glacier hikes, waterfall stops, black-sand beaches and super-jeep tours. Group size: 10 to 120. Venue type: rural hotels with mountain views, glacier-view lodges and farm stays. Season: May to September for easiest driving; winter for ice caves and auroras with a flexible plan. Getting there: about 1 hour by car from Reykjavik to Selfoss and roughly 2.5 hours to Vík.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Best for: small executive groups who want a quieter "Iceland in miniature" with a glacier-topped volcano, lava caves and fishing villages. Group size: 8 to 50. Venue type: small countryside hotels and guesthouses; meeting space is limited. Season: May to September. Getting there: roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by car from Reykjavik.

Akureyri and the North

Best for: teams that want whale watching, Lake Mývatn's craters and nature baths, and fewer crowds than the south. Group size: 10 to 100. Venue type: town hotels in Akureyri and lakeside hotels around Mývatn. Season: June to August for whales and midnight sun; winter for skiing and auroras. Getting there: about 45 minutes by domestic flight from Reykjavik, or roughly 1.25 hours by car from Akureyri to Mývatn.

Best time for a corporate retreat in Iceland

June to August brings near-endless daylight, open highland roads and the mildest weather, but also peak prices and the busiest sights. September and early October are a strong compromise: fewer visitors, autumn colors and the start of aurora season. From November to February there are only a few hours of daylight, storms can close roads, and programs need slack built in; in return, you get ice caves, auroras and a cozier feel. Spring (March to May) brings returning light and lower rates.

Choosing an Icelandic location by goal

For an agenda-heavy offsite, stay in Reykjavik and add one big day out on the Golden Circle or South Coast. For a leadership retreat, a Golden Circle or Snæfellsnes lodge gives privacy and space to think. For a reward trip, a two-base program, such as Reykjavik and the South Coast, delivers the glacier walks and waterfalls people expect. Book coaches with experienced local drivers rather than self-drive rentals, especially in winter.

Budget and planning notes

Iceland is expensive: restaurant meals, alcohol and guided tours cost noticeably more than in most of Europe or the US. Summer and the Christmas to New Year period are the priciest; late spring and fall offer better rates. Countryside lodges have a limited number of rooms, so larger groups may need a city base or a full buyout booked well ahead. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Nearby alternatives

  • Edinburgh: a historic city with Highland day trips and a milder climate.
  • Banff: mountain and lake scenery closer to home for North American teams.
  • Lisbon: a sunnier, lower-cost European city for East Coast teams.

Iceland corporate retreat FAQs

How long is the flight to Iceland from the US?

From East Coast hubs, nonstop flights take roughly 5 to 6 hours, and many Midwest and West Coast cities also have nonstop service in season. Overnight eastbound flights land early in the morning, so plan a light first day.

Can we see the northern lights on a winter offsite?

There is a good chance from September to March on clear, dark nights, but it is never certain. Build the aurora into the evening program as a bonus rather than the main event.

Is Iceland good for a large company retreat?

Reykjavik can host a few hundred people with proper conference space. Countryside hotels are smaller, so groups above roughly 100 usually stay in the city and travel out on day trips.

How many days should an Iceland offsite be?

Plan at least four nights. That allows one recovery morning after the overnight flight, two full days of work and activities, and time for a longer day trip.
