Holbox is a car-free sand island off the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, inside the Yum Balam nature reserve. It suits small leadership teams, founder groups and creative teams of roughly 8 to 30 people who want a slow, barefoot setting with very few distractions.

The short case for it: golf carts instead of cars, shallow turquoise water on one side and a mangrove lagoon on the other, and a town small enough to walk across in minutes. The trade-off is a longer trip than Cancún or Tulum, and hotels that are boutique rather than built for big conferences.

Why Holbox works for a team offsite

  • Reachable, with effort. Most teams fly into Cancún International, which has nonstop service from dozens of US cities. From there it is roughly two to two and a half hours by road to the port of Chiquilá, then about 20 to 30 minutes by passenger ferry. Small charter flights to the island's airstrip cut the transfer for a premium.
  • Boutique buyouts. Hotels here are low-rise and small. A team can often fill most of a property, which gives you private dining and quiet common areas without paying for a full resort.
  • Few distractions by design. With no cars, no high-rises and a sleepy pace after dark, Holbox lends itself to strategy days, writing sessions and offsites built around long conversations.
  • Easy evenings. The streets around the main square are lined with small restaurants, ceviche counters and beach bars, so a group dinner rarely needs more than a short walk or cart ride.
  • The caveats. Wi-Fi and power can be patchy, card payments are not universal, mosquitoes appear after rain, and the sand roads turn muddy in the wet season. Plan backup connectivity if your agenda depends on video calls. Mexico's travel advisories vary by state, so check current government travel advice for Quintana Roo before you book.

Best time for a corporate retreat in Holbox

November through April brings the most settled weather, low humidity and calm water, and it is the main kitesurfing season thanks to steady winter winds. Whale shark tours run roughly from June through September, which draws teams who want that experience, but those months are hot, humid and inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which lasts from June to November. Christmas, New Year and Mexican Easter week (Semana Santa) fill the island quickly, so avoid them or book very early. Seaweed can wash up on some beaches in warm months; it varies year to year.

Budget and planning notes

On Holbox the transfer is a real line item: the coach from Cancún, the ferry and golf carts on the island add up, and air charters cost more again. Hotel rates peak from December through April and around Mexican holidays, while late spring and autumn are softer. Because properties are small, a full buyout is the usual way to keep a group together, and that needs a long lead time in high season. Bring cash for small vendors. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Tell us your headcount and preferred month and we will send a free itemized proposal in days, with one upfront price per person, 24/7 remote support during the trip and an optional on-site coordinator. Holbox corporate retreat FAQs

How do you get a team to Holbox?

Fly into Cancún, then take a coach of roughly two to two and a half hours to Chiquilá and a short passenger ferry to the island. Small charter flights are an option if you want to save road time.

How large a group can Holbox handle?

Holbox is best for teams of about 8 to 30. Larger groups usually need to split across two or three neighboring boutique hotels.

When is whale shark season on Holbox?

Tours generally run from about June to September. Those months are hot and fall in hurricane season, so build some flexibility into the plan.

How many days should a Holbox offsite be?

Plan at least three nights. The transfer from Cancún takes most of a half day each way, so a two-night trip leaves little time on the island.
