Corporate retreat in the Basque Country: venues, activities and a 3-day plan

The Basque Country packs a surf coast, green mountains, a serious wine region and one of the densest restaurant scenes in Europe into an area you can drive across in about two hours. It suits teams that bond over food: leadership groups, product teams on a planning offsite, and client-facing teams on an incentive trip of 10 to 80 people.

Our Bilbao guide covers the city and its classic San Sebastián hotels. This page is about the rest of the region: a Gehry-designed winery hotel in Rioja Alavesa, a palace on the fishing coast, a seafront hotel in Getxo and quieter villas in San Sebastián. The case for it is variety without long transfers.

Why the Basque Country works for a team offsite

  • Getting there. Bilbao airport is the main gateway, with connections through Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and other European hubs; there are generally no nonstop flights from the US. San Sebastián is roughly an hour from Bilbao airport by road and Elciego about 90 minutes. Biarritz airport, across the French border, is about 45 minutes from San Sebastián.
  • Three settings in one trip. The Bizkaia coast, the city of San Sebastián and the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa can each anchor a day, so a group can change scenery without changing hotels more than once.
  • Food as the agenda. Pintxo bars, cider houses and cooking schools give you team activities that need no special fitness or gear.
  • Walkable evenings. San Sebastián's Parte Vieja is compact, so a dine-around between pintxo bars works for big groups split into small teams.
  • The caveat is rain and scale. The region is green because it rains often, even in summer. Many of the best hotels are boutique, so groups above 60 or so usually need to split rooms or use a congress venue.

Best time for a corporate retreat in the Basque Country

May, June, September and early October are the sweet spot: mild weather, long evenings and open terraces. July and August bring the best beach weather but also peak prices and crowds, especially during San Sebastián's Semana Grande and Bilbao's Aste Nagusia festivals in August. The San Sebastián International Film Festival in late September fills hotels in the city. Harvest season in Rioja Alavesa, usually September and October, is a lovely time to visit the wineries but book early. Winter is quiet and cheaper, with cider-house season running from about January to April.

Corporate retreat venues in the Basque Country

Hotel Marqués de Riscal (Elciego)

The hotel at the Marqués de Riscal winery, with its titanium roof by Frank Gehry, sits among vineyards in Rioja Alavesa; the estate runs a weddings and events program. It suits leadership offsites and incentive groups that want a design landmark, wine and quiet in one place.

Hotel Villa Soro (San Sebastián)

A boutique hotel in a 19th-century villa with gardens in the Ategorrieta area, a short ride from the old town, offering events and meeting space. It is a good choice for executive retreats and small groups who want calm rooms near the restaurants.

Hotel Embarcadero (Getxo)

A seafront hotel in Getxo at the mouth of the Bilbao estuary, with event spaces and a terrace facing the water. It works for teams who want sea air and easy access to Bilbao by metro, without the bustle of the city center.

Hotel Zubieta (Lekeitio)

A hotel in the grounds of the Palacio de Zubieta, near the fishing town of Lekeitio, which uses the palace for events and celebrations. It fits a small team that wants a remote, historic setting on the Bizkaia coast, roughly an hour from Bilbao.

  • Txakoli tasting in the hills above Getaria, followed by grilled fish in the harbor.
  • A walk to the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe on its rocky islet, booking access in advance in busy months.
  • A cellar tour in Laguardia, the walled hilltop town of Rioja Alavesa.

Budget and planning notes

Costs rise sharply in July, August and festival weeks, and top restaurants book out months ahead, so lock in group dinners early. Boutique hotels mean you may need two properties or a full buyout for larger groups, which takes lead time. A multi-base trip adds coach transfers, though distances are short. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Share your dates and group size and we will put together a free itemized proposal in days, priced per person up front, with 24/7 remote support and an optional on-site coordinator. Basque Country corporate retreat FAQs

Should we base a Basque retreat in Bilbao or San Sebastián?

Bilbao has more large hotels and is closer to the airport. San Sebastián is the stronger choice for food, the beach and a walkable old town, but rooms are pricier and venues smaller.

How many days does a Basque Country offsite need?

Three days covers the coast and a work day. Add a fourth if you want a night in Rioja Alavesa wine country.

Can we get there nonstop from the US?

Generally not. Most teams connect through Madrid or another European hub to Bilbao, or fly into Biarritz across the French border.

Is the Basque Country good for large groups?

Yes, with planning. Many standout hotels are boutique, so larger groups usually combine properties or use a congress venue for plenaries.
