Corporate retreat locations in Minnesota

Done-for-you team offsites with one itemized price per person and 24/7 remote support. Free proposal in days.

Minnesota is lake country with a major airline hub in the middle of it. Within a couple of hours of Minneapolis-St. Paul International you can be at a pine-and-lake resort, in a river town with antique shops, or on the rocky shore of Lake Superior. That mix suits companies that want a classic summer team retreat without a long transfer, and Midwest-heavy teams that would rather drive than fly.

Here are seven corporate retreat locations in Minnesota, each with the right group, venue styles, best months and travel time. All times are approximate; winter driving can add a lot to them.

Where to hold a corporate retreat in Minnesota

Minneapolis and St. Paul

Best for: all-hands meetings and kickoffs that need flight access, hotel inventory and a lively restaurant scene. Group size: 20 to 800. Venue type: downtown hotels linked by the skyway system, North Loop boutiques and riverfront event spaces. Season: May to October outdoors; the skyways make winter programs workable. Getting there: about 20 minutes from MSP to either downtown. Our Minneapolis retreat guide covers venues and a sample itinerary.

Lake Minnetonka

Best for: leadership offsites that want a lake setting close to the airport. Group size: 10 to 100. Venue type: lakeside hotels in Wayzata and Excelsior, event venues with docks and private homes. Season: June to September for boat cruises and patio dinners. Getting there: about 30 minutes by car from MSP.

Stillwater and the St. Croix Valley

Best for: small teams that want a historic river town for a one- or two-night offsite. Group size: 8 to 80. Venue type: boutique hotels in restored mill buildings, inns and nearby wineries. Season: May to October, with fall color on the bluffs in early October. Getting there: roughly 30 to 45 minutes from MSP.

Brainerd Lakes

Best for: sales kickoffs and team retreats built around golf, boating and lodge dinners. Group size: 20 to 400. Venue type: full-service lake resorts with conference centers, golf courses and cabins. Season: June to September; late spring and early fall bring lower rates. Getting there: about 2.5 hours by car from MSP; Brainerd also has a small regional airport.

Duluth

Best for: mid-size teams that want a harbor city on Lake Superior with hiking and breweries close by. Group size: 15 to 250. Venue type: waterfront hotels in Canal Park, historic properties and a convention center. Season: June to early October; summer is cool by the lake. Getting there: about 2.5 hours by car from MSP, or a short connecting flight to Duluth's airport.

The North Shore: Lutsen and Grand Marais

Best for: leadership and small-team retreats that want cliffs, waterfalls and real quiet. Group size: 8 to 100. Venue type: lodges and resorts on Lake Superior, cabins and a ski area with meeting space. Season: late June to early October, with peak color in late September; winter suits a cross-country ski or snowshoe retreat. Getting there: roughly 1.5 to 2 hours northeast of Duluth along Highway 61.

Ely and the Boundary Waters edge

Best for: very small founder or exec groups that want a canoe trip as the offsite itself. Group size: 4 to 20. Venue type: wilderness lodges and outfitter-run camps. Season: June to early September. Getting there: about 4 hours or more by car from MSP. Entry permits are required for the Boundary Waters, and cell coverage is minimal, so plan this as a deliberate disconnect.

Best time for a corporate retreat in Minnesota

Mid-June to mid-September is the reliable window for lake resorts, and late September is excellent for fall color on the North Shore. The Minnesota State Fair runs for the 12 days ending on Labor Day and puts real pressure on Twin Cities hotels. May can be cool and buggy up north. Winter is long and very cold; it works for a city program, a ski lodge or a deliberately wintry retreat with snowshoeing, but outdoor plans need serious gear.

Budget and planning notes

Twin Cities hotels are reasonably priced for a major metro, and weekday rates outside fair season and big conventions are often a good deal. Lake resorts price summer weekends at a premium, and many offer better group terms Sunday through Thursday or in June and September. Up north, the cost driver is the coach from MSP and the limited number of properties that can take a full group. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Minnesota corporate retreat FAQs

Where is the best lake resort area in Minnesota for a team retreat?

Brainerd Lakes has the most full-service resorts that can host a large group with golf and meeting space. For a smaller, more scenic trip, the North Shore of Lake Superior is the standout.

How far are Minnesota's resort areas from the airport?

Lake Minnetonka and Stillwater are under an hour from MSP. Brainerd and Duluth are about 2.5 hours by car, and the North Shore is roughly 4 hours or more.

Is a winter retreat in Minnesota a good idea?

It can be, for a team that wants it. Downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul work well with their skyways, and northern lodges offer skiing and snowshoeing, but build in buffer time for weather.

Is Minnesota good for a company with people across the country?

Yes. MSP is a major hub with nonstop flights to most large US cities, so most attendees can arrive on a single flight and reach downtown in about 20 minutes.
