Lake Placid is a small Adirondack village that has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1980. It suits teams that want a real mountain retreat with lakes, big hikes and Olympic history, and it fits leadership offsites, team retreats and incentive trips of a few dozen people especially well.

The case for it: everything is close together once you arrive, and the setting is very different from a typical meeting city. The trade-off is that it takes more effort to reach than most destinations on this list.

Why Lake Placid works for a team offsite

  • Remote but reachable. Adirondack Regional Airport near Saranac Lake is about 20 to 25 minutes away but has very limited service. Most teams fly into Albany and drive roughly 2.5 hours north, or use Burlington, Vermont, or Montreal, each about 2 to 2.5 hours away by car.
  • A walkable village. Hotels, restaurants and shops line Main Street along Mirror Lake, so once the group is there, cars are rarely needed.
  • Varied lodging. Choose between a Great Camp-style lodge, lakeside resorts on Mirror Lake and a waterfront lodge on Lake Placid itself.
  • Built-in activities. Olympic venues, hiking in the High Peaks and paddling on two lakes give you plenty to plan around.
  • The caveat is travel time and weather. Winters are long and cold, and late spring brings mud and black flies, so timing matters.

Best time for a corporate retreat in Lake Placid

July, August and September are the most popular months for warm-weather retreats, with fall foliage usually peaking in late September and early October. January through March is great for groups that want snow, skating and winter sports. Avoid the week of Ironman Lake Placid in late July, when the village is full, and be cautious about late April to mid-June, which brings mud season and black flies. Big hockey and winter sports events at the Olympic Center can also fill rooms, so check the calendar.

Budget and planning notes

The biggest cost factor in Lake Placid is getting there. Flights into Albany, Burlington or Montreal plus a 2- to 2.5-hour coach transfer add time and money, so a four-day trip often makes more sense than three. Lodging is usually cheaper than in big cities, but peak summer weekends, foliage season and major events push rates up. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Lake Placid corporate retreat FAQs

How do we get to Lake Placid?

Most teams fly into Albany and drive about 2.5 hours north. Burlington and Montreal are also options, each about 2 to 2.5 hours away by car.

How many days should a Lake Placid offsite be?

Because travel takes time, three nights is often better than two. That gives one full working day and one activity day.

When is the best time for a Lake Placid retreat?

Summer and early fall for hiking and paddling, and January to March for winter sports. Avoid late spring, when mud and black flies are at their worst.

Is Lake Placid good for large groups?

It works well for groups of a few dozen. Larger teams can use one of the bigger resorts on Main Street, but the village has limited total hotel space.
