Corporate retreat in the Lake Erie Islands: venues, activities and a 3-day plan

Done-for-you team offsites with one itemized price per person and 24/7 remote support. Free proposal in days.

The Lake Erie Islands are a cluster of small islands and lakeshore towns off Ohio's north coast, between Toledo and Sandusky. As a retreat region, it suits summer team trips, leadership offsites and company outings of about 10 to 120 people who like the idea of ferries, wineries and lake sunsets instead of a city.

The case for it: you base the group on the mainland shore around Marblehead, Catawba Island and Port Clinton, then hop to Kelleys Island or South Bass Island for the day. If you want the full island-town experience, read our Put-in-Bay guide; for theme parks and waterpark resorts, see Sandusky.

Why the Lake Erie Islands work for a team offsite

  • Getting there. Cleveland Hopkins (CLE) is about an hour and a quarter from Port Clinton and Detroit Metro (DTW) is roughly an hour and a half; Toledo Express is closer but has few flights. Ferries to the islands take roughly 20 minutes from the Marblehead and Catawba docks.
  • Mainland base, island days. Lodging on the peninsula keeps logistics simple and weatherproof, while a ferry trip gives the program an adventure feel.
  • Venue variety. A Victorian lakefront hotel in a Chautauqua community, a lakeside club, a state park conference lodge, island wineries and a resort on South Bass Island all host groups.
  • Easy summer evenings. Waterfront patios, winery tastings and sunsets over the lake make dinners straightforward from June to September.
  • The caveat is the season and the lake. Many island businesses run from late spring to early fall only, and high winds can delay or cancel ferries, so keep island legs flexible.

Best time for a corporate retreat in the Lake Erie Islands

June and September are the sweet spots: warm water, full ferry schedules and fewer crowds than July and August. Midsummer weekends are very busy on the islands, especially Put-in-Bay, and lodging fills early. May and early October work for mainland-based programs with shorter island visits, since ferry schedules thin and some island restaurants close. From November to April the islands are mostly shut for visitors and winter weather on the lake is harsh.

Corporate retreat venues in the Lake Erie Islands

Hotel Lakeside

A restored Victorian hotel on the lakefront in Lakeside Chautauqua, a historic summer community on the Marblehead Peninsula that also rents halls and hosts retreats and leadership conferences. It suits teams that want a walkable, old-fashioned lake town as their base.

Catawba Island Club

A lakeside member club on Catawba Island, a short drive from the Miller Ferry dock, that also runs a private events and meetings program. Use it for a team dinner or a working day that ends on the water.

Put-in-Bay Resort & Conference Center

A resort with a conference center on South Bass Island, a short walk or golf cart ride from the village of Put-in-Bay. It is the main island option for groups that want to sleep on an island rather than day-trip.

Kelleys Island Wine Co.

A family winery on Kelleys Island with grounds, a cantina and a calendar of events. It works as a lunch and tasting stop on a ferry day to the island.

Maumee Bay Lodge & Conference Center (about an hour away)

A state park lodge with a conference center on the lakeshore east of Toledo, near the Oregon area. It suits larger meetings that need more room than the island towns offer.

Team activities in the Lake Erie Islands

  • A ferry hop to Kelleys Island to see the Glacial Grooves, deep scars left in the limestone by ice sheets, then bike the island's quiet roads.
  • A day on South Bass Island with golf carts, the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial and lunch in Put-in-Bay.
  • A visit to Marblehead Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in continuous use on the Great Lakes.
  • A walleye or perch fishing charter out of Port Clinton, a classic Lake Erie team outing.
  • A kayak or paddleboard session along the sheltered shoreline of East Harbor State Park.
  • A drive-through tour at African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton for a lighthearted afternoon.
  • A sunset dinner cruise or private charter between the islands.

Budget and planning notes

Costs here depend on the month and on how much of the program happens on an island. Midsummer weekends carry the highest lodging rates and minimum stays, while June and September weekdays are better value. Ferry tickets, golf cart rentals and bike hire are small per person but add up for a large group. A mainland base is usually cheaper and easier than island lodging. Always keep a fallback for a windy day when ferries stop running. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Lake Erie Islands corporate retreat FAQs

Should we stay on an island or on the mainland?

Most teams base themselves on the Marblehead Peninsula or Catawba Island and take ferries for day trips. Stay on South Bass Island only if the island itself is the focus and your dates fall in peak season.

How do you get to the Lake Erie Islands?

Fly into Cleveland or Detroit and drive to the ferry docks, about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half. Car and passenger ferries cross to the islands in roughly 20 minutes.

Can we visit the islands in the off-season?

Ferry service shrinks and most island businesses close from late fall to spring. Plan island time for late May through early October.

What happens if the ferries are cancelled?

Strong winds sometimes stop crossings. Keep sessions and lodging on the mainland and schedule island visits with a backup day or a mainland alternative.
