Corporate retreat on the Kohala Coast: venues, activities and a 3-day plan

Done-for-you team offsites with one itemized price per person and 24/7 remote support. Free proposal in days.

The Kohala Coast is the stretch of Hawaii Island's northwest shore where resort developers carved green golf courses and white-sand coves out of old black lava flows. The result is a run of self-contained resort areas, Waikoloa, Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea, each with its own beaches, golf, restaurants and conference space, and very little else around them.

That isolation is the point. It suits incentive trips, sales kickoffs and leadership retreats from about 20 to many hundreds of people that want to land, stay put and focus. Teams looking for nightlife or a town to explore should look at Kona instead.

Why the Kohala Coast works for a team offsite

  • Getting there. Kona International Airport (KOA) has nonstops from several West Coast cities and frequent Honolulu connections. The Waikoloa resorts are about 25 minutes away, Mauna Lani about 30, and Mauna Kea and Hapuna roughly 35 to 40 minutes.
  • Big conference resorts. Several properties here are built for large groups, with ballrooms, lawns and enough rooms to keep a whole company on one campus.
  • Reliable sunshine. This is one of the driest parts of Hawaii, which makes outdoor dinners and lawn sessions easy to plan.
  • Everything on site. Golf, spas, beaches and restaurants are inside each resort area, so there is little need for coaches once the group arrives.
  • The caveat is distance. Off-resort dining is limited, the volcano is a long day trip, and the lava landscape can feel stark to some attendees.

Best time for a corporate retreat on the Kohala Coast

The weather is dry year-round, so plan around price and demand. April, May, September and October offer the best combination of weather and group rates. Winter, from December to April, brings humpback whales and higher rates, and the holidays are booked early by families. Summer is busy with leisure travelers and can be windy in the afternoons. Hurricane season runs June through November; serious impacts are uncommon, but build flexibility into contracts.

Corporate retreat venues on the Kohala Coast

Mauna Lani, Auberge Collection

A luxury resort at Mauna Lani with ancient fishponds on the grounds and a dedicated incentives and meetings program. It suits leadership retreats and premium incentives that want a calm, design-led setting.

Fairmont Orchid

A large oceanfront resort next door at Mauna Lani with an extensive meetings operation and a protected swimming lagoon. A strong pick for mid-size and large company meetings that want resort amenities and quick access to the golf courses.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel

The historic resort that started the Kohala Coast, set on one of the best beaches in Hawaii, with meeting rooms and outdoor event spaces. Suited to executive groups that want a classic, understated feel.

The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort

A resort above Hapuna Beach within the Mauna Kea resort area, with meeting rooms and lawns. Practical for company offsites that want a big beach, a Marriott contract and a lower rate than its luxury neighbors.

Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

A beachfront resort on 'Anaeho'omalu Bay in Waikoloa, close to two shopping and dining centers, with a conference setup. It is the closest of these resorts to the airport and the easiest base for teams that want a little more to do in the evening.

Hilton Waikoloa Village

A sprawling resort in the Waikoloa area, with a lagoon, pools and its own tram and boats to move guests around the grounds. Meet Hawaii lists it as a meeting venue and runs an incentive offer for it, and it suits large groups and family-friendly incentive trips.

A useful rule of thumb: pick the resort area first, then the hotel. Waikoloa is the most social and the shortest ride from the airport, Mauna Lani balances privacy with amenities, and Mauna Kea is the quietest and most remote. Within each area, neighboring resorts can share golf, beaches and sometimes a large group's overflow rooms.

  • A snorkel or stand-up paddle session at 'Anaeho'omalu Bay or Hapuna Beach.
  • A drive to Waipi'o Valley Lookout and the ranch town of Waimea, with lunch in the cool uplands.
  • A visit to Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, one of the most important temple sites in Hawaii.
  • A team golf scramble on one of the resort courses.
  • An evening stargazing program with a local guide, using the dark, dry skies.

Budget and planning notes

Kohala Coast resorts price like other premium Hawaii resorts: food-and-beverage minimums, resort fees and season are the main levers. Because guests rarely leave the resort, meals are mostly inside the contract, which makes the budget predictable but less flexible. Shoulder months and midweek arrivals help, and airfare remains the biggest per-person cost for mainland teams. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately.
