Corporate retreat on the Gili Islands: venues, activities and a 3-day plan

The Gili Islands are three small, flat coral islands off the northwest coast of Lombok: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. There are no cars or motorbikes, just bicycles, horse carts and sandy lanes, and the water around them is clear, warm and full of turtles. They suit small teams, founder groups and leadership offsites of up to a few dozen people who want a true switch-off.
The case for the Gilis is simplicity: once the boat lands, nobody needs a transfer, a taxi or a plan for getting around. The trade-off is that everything takes a boat to reach, so the Gilis work best as part of a longer trip. For the wider area, read our Lombok corporate retreat guide, which covers the mainland resorts that face the islands.
Why the Gili Islands work for a team offsite
- Getting there. There is no airport on the islands. Fly into Lombok International Airport, then drive roughly two hours to the north-coast harbor for a short public or private boat, or take a fast boat from Bali, which runs roughly two to three hours depending on the port and the sea. US teams connect through a hub such as Singapore, often via Bali.
- Three islands, three moods. Trawangan is the largest and most social, Meno is the quietest, and Air sits in between with a relaxed village feel.
- Small, personal venues. Resorts here are boutique hotels and villa estates rather than conference hotels, which suits workshops around one table rather than stage-and-screen plenaries.
- Evenings without logistics. Walk or cycle to dinner on the beach, watch the sun set over Bali's Mount Agung, and walk home.
- Caveats. Boats depend on the weather, medical facilities are basic, and power and Wi-Fi are less dependable than on Bali, so bring a backup plan for important video calls. Trawangan also has a lively party scene that some teams will want to avoid.
Best time for a corporate retreat on the Gili Islands
April to October is the dry season, with calmer seas for boat crossings and the best visibility for snorkeling and diving. July and August are the busiest months, so book rooms and boats early. From about November to March, rain is more frequent and the crossing from Bali can be rough or cancelled, which makes tight schedules risky. During Ramadan, island life is quieter, as Lombok's population is mostly Muslim; plan meals with respect for those fasting. Lombok and the Gilis do not observe Bali's Nyepi shutdown, but Bali's airport does, so routes via Bali are affected that day.
Corporate retreat venues on the Gili Islands
Hotel Vila Ombak
A long-running beachfront hotel on the east side of Gili Trawangan, near the harbor, with a meeting and events offering. It is the easiest Gili base for a small working group that wants a pool, restaurants and short walks to the boat.
Ombak Sunset
A sister resort on the quieter west coast of Gili Trawangan, facing the sunset, which handles group bookings and events. It suits teams that want Trawangan's convenience with calmer evenings.
Pondok Santi Estate
A villa estate set in a coconut grove at the southern end of Gili Trawangan, with a beachfront event space used for weddings and private gatherings. A buyout here suits leadership teams that want the privacy of their own compound.
Seri Resort Gili Meno
A beachfront resort on Gili Meno, the smallest and calmest island, which hosts events and groups. It is the right pick for teams that want quiet above everything else.
Slow Gili Air
A design-led boutique hotel on Gili Air that runs its own retreat program. Its compact size works for a founder group or a small leadership team that wants wellness and focus.
The Oberoi Beach Resort, Lombok (nearby, on the Lombok mainland)
A beachfront resort on Medana Bay on the Lombok coast opposite the islands, with a meeting room and events program. Use it as a quieter mainland base, with day trips out to the Gilis by boat.

Team activities on the Gili Islands
- A snorkeling trip by glass-bottom boat around all three islands, with stops at turtle spots.
- A visit to the underwater statue installation off Gili Meno, best seen with masks and fins.
- An introductory scuba dive or freediving session with one of the dive schools on the islands.
- A cycling loop around Gili Trawangan, which takes about an hour at an easy pace.
- A sunset walk on the west side of Trawangan, looking toward Bali.
- A sunrise yoga class on Gili Air or Gili Meno.
- An Indonesian cooking class with a market visit on Trawangan.
- A grilled seafood dinner at the Trawangan night market, close to the harbor.
Sample 3-day Gili Islands offsite
Day 1: Cross to the island
- Morning boat from Bali or the Lombok coast, timed for the calmer morning sea.
- Horse cart or bicycle to the hotel and an easy afternoon on the beach.
- Welcome dinner on the sand at sunset.
Day 2: Sessions and the reef
- Morning workshop in a shaded pavilion.
- Afternoon snorkeling boat around the three islands.
- Seafood dinner at the night market.
Day 3: Commit and head back
- Early yoga for those who want it, then a closing session.
- Midday boat back, with a spare buffer before any onward flight.
Because of the boat legs, most teams pair the Gilis with two or more nights in Bali or on Lombok.
Budget and planning notes
Boat transfers are the line item that surprises people: private fast boats from Bali, porters on arrival and a weather buffer night all add cost. Room rates peak in July and August, villa estate buyouts need early booking, and food and drink cost more on the islands than on the mainland because supplies come in by boat. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Gili Islands corporate retreat FAQs
Which Gili island is best for a company retreat?
Gili Trawangan has the most hotels, restaurants and services. Gili Meno is best for quiet, and Gili Air sits between the two.
How do we get to the Gili Islands?
Take a fast boat from Bali, roughly two to three hours, or fly to Lombok and drive about two hours to the harbor for a short boat ride. Boats are weather-dependent, so leave buffer time.
How big a group can the Gili Islands handle?
The islands suit small groups best, since venues are boutique hotels and villa estates. Larger teams should base on Lombok or Bali and visit the Gilis for a day.
Is the internet good enough for remote work?
Most hotels have Wi-Fi that handles everyday work, but it is less reliable than on Bali. Bring mobile data as a backup and avoid booking critical calls on travel days.
