Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, is famous for giant pandas, fiery food and an unhurried teahouse culture. It suits teams of about 15 to 200 that want a China offsite with personality, where the food and the pace of life become part of the program, and it is a strong base for companies with operations in western China.
The case for it in one line: modern hotels in lively districts, a full day of activities that need no long transfers, and evenings that revolve around hotpot. Expect gray skies much of the year and plan around the summer heat.
Why Chengdu works for a team offsite
- Getting there. Chengdu has two airports: Tianfu International, roughly an hour southeast of the center, and Shuangliu International, about 30 minutes from downtown. Most US teams connect through a Chinese or Asian hub. Visa and visa-free transit rules for China change, so confirm entry requirements early, and check current government travel advice before booking.
- A good hotel mix. Design hotels around Taikoo Li and Chunxi Road sit in the walkable center, while larger international hotels line Renmin Road and the Tianfu Avenue business corridor in the south.
- Easy to fill the day. The panda base, Wenshu Monastery, the People's Park teahouses and the old lanes of Kuanzhai Xiangzi are all inside the city.
- Evenings built around food. A shared hotpot dinner, a Sichuan opera show with face-changing, and late snacks on Jinli Street make nights simple to plan.
- The caveats. Summers are hot and humid, winters are damp and overcast, and the spice level is real, so ask restaurants for mild options for anyone who needs them.
Best time for a corporate retreat in Chengdu
March through May and September through November are the best months, with mild temperatures and more comfortable sightseeing. Spring is also when the rapeseed fields around the city turn yellow. July and August are hot and sticky, with heavy rain at times, and winter is cool and gray rather than cold. Avoid the National Day week in early October, May Day and Lunar New Year, when the panda base and old lanes are extremely crowded.

Budget and planning notes
Chengdu offers strong value compared with Shanghai or Beijing. Upscale hotels and group dining cost less, and most activities are short drives. Costs rise during national holidays and with day trips to Leshan or Mount Qingcheng, which add coaches, guides and entrance fees. Choosing the right airport matters too: Tianfu is a longer transfer to the center than Shuangliu. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Chengdu corporate retreat FAQs
Which Chengdu airport should our team use?
Shuangliu is closer to the center, roughly 30 minutes by car, while Tianfu handles most international flights and is about an hour away. Check which one your routes use before booking hotels.
Is the food in Chengdu too spicy for a mixed group?
It can be, but restaurants are used to adjusting. Split hotpots with a mild broth and a few non-spicy dishes at each meal keep everyone happy.
Where should we stay in Chengdu?
Stay near Taikoo Li or Chunxi Road for walkable evenings, or in the Hi-Tech Zone if your program includes office visits in the south of the city.
How many days is right for a Chengdu offsite?
Three days covers the panda base, one strong work day and a food evening. Add a day for Leshan or Mount Qingcheng.
