Corporate retreat on Block Island: venues, activities and a 3-day plan

Block Island sits about 13 miles off the Rhode Island coast, a small island of bluffs, stone walls, two harbors and very little traffic. It suits small teams of roughly 10 to 50 that want a true getaway: a couple of days where the ferry ride itself signals that normal work is paused.
The case for it is focus. There are no big conference hotels, and that is the point. A leadership group can take over most of a Victorian inn, bike to dinner and spend an afternoon on the cliffs, all within a few miles. The cost is logistics, which revolve around ferry schedules and a short summer season.
Why Block Island works for a team offsite
- Getting there takes planning. Most teams fly into Providence T.F. Green (PVD) and drive about 40 minutes to the Point Judith ferry in Narragansett. The traditional ferry takes about an hour and the high-speed boat roughly half that. Seasonal fast ferries also run from Newport, New London and Montauk, and small planes fly from Westerly in about 15 minutes.
- Character over scale. Lodging is Victorian hotels, inns and cottages, several of which run meetings and events and can host a full buyout.
- A small, simple footprint. Old Harbor's hotels, restaurants and the ferry landing are walkable, and bikes or a hired van cover the rest of the island.
- Evenings are relaxed. Dinner, a drink on a hotel porch overlooking the water and an early night is the usual rhythm, which suits reflective sessions.
- Caveats. Room inventory is small, summer weekends are crowded, and many properties close or cut back after mid-October. Car spaces on the ferry sell out, so plan to leave vehicles on the mainland.
Best time for a corporate retreat on Block Island
June and September are the sweet spots: warm enough for biking and beach time, but without the peak of July and August, when rates are highest and day-trippers fill Old Harbor. Late May and early October can work for a hardy group and are quieter still, but some restaurants and inns run reduced hours. From late October to April much of the island shuts down and ferry service drops to a winter schedule. Fog and summer storms can delay boats, so leave slack in arrival and departure plans.
Corporate retreat venues on Block Island
The Spring House Hotel
A large Victorian hotel on a hill above Old Harbor with a wide lawn and ocean views, and a meetings and conferences program. It is the most practical pick for a group that needs a real meeting room and a lawn for a reception.
The Atlantic Inn
A hilltop Victorian inn above Old Harbor with gardens, a porch facing the sea and a dedicated meetings and events offer. Its size makes it a good match for an executive team that wants to fill the property.
Hotel Manisses
A restored Victorian hotel in town, part of the 1661 group of hotels, inns and cottages, with an event planning team. It suits a mid-size group that wants rooms spread across sister properties under one manager.
Champlin's Resort
A marina resort on the Great Salt Pond in New Harbor, with rooms, a pool and an event venue on the water. It works for groups that arrive by private boat or want a casual, active base away from Old Harbor.
The National Hotel
The Victorian hotel across the street from the Old Harbor ferry landing, with a long front porch, a restaurant facing the harbor and a backyard with firepits. Use it for a room block or a casual group dinner within walking distance of everything; we could not confirm dedicated meeting rooms, so check group options with the hotel.

Budget and planning notes
On Block Island, July and August weekends are the most expensive and hardest to book, and many hotels set multi-night minimums in peak months. Shoulder-season weekdays are far easier. Budget for ferry tickets for the whole group, luggage handling and island transport, since bringing cars across is costly and limited. With only a few hotels that can host a meeting, booking a full property early is often the only way to keep a group together. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Block Island corporate retreat FAQs
Can Block Island handle a large corporate group?
Not easily. The island suits groups up to about 50 people, split across a hotel and its sister inns. Larger teams should consider Newport or another mainland base.
How do we get a team to Block Island from New York or Boston?
From Boston, drive or take a coach about two hours to Point Judith, then ferry. From New York, fly to Providence or drive roughly three hours to Point Judith or New London, or use the seasonal fast ferry from Montauk.
Do we need cars on the island?
No. Old Harbor is walkable, and bikes, mopeds, taxis and a hired van cover the rest. Leaving cars on the mainland saves money and ferry hassle.
When does Block Island close for the season?
Many hotels and restaurants close or reduce hours from mid-October to May. For a retreat with full services, plan for late May through early October.
