The Atacama Desert in northern Chile is one of the driest places on Earth, a high plateau of salt flats, volcanoes, geysers and some of the clearest night skies anywhere. Almost every trip is based in San Pedro de Atacama, an adobe oasis town with lodges and small hotels. It suits leadership teams, incentive groups and company retreats of roughly 10 to 120 people who want a dramatic setting and a program built around early mornings and starry nights.

The reason to choose it: few places give a team such a strong sense of being somewhere completely different, and the town is small enough that the group stays together the whole time.

Why the Atacama Desert works for a team offsite

  • Getting there. Teams fly to Santiago, then take a domestic flight of about 2 hours to Calama. From Calama's airport, the drive to San Pedro de Atacama takes roughly 1.5 hours. There are no US nonstops to Calama, but Santiago has nonstop service from several US hubs.
  • A small, walkable base. San Pedro's dirt streets hold restaurants, cafés and craft shops within a few minutes' walk of the central hotels, while lodges on the edge of town offer more space.
  • All-inclusive lodges. Some lodges bundle meals, guides and excursions, which simplifies planning and budgeting for small groups.
  • A natural agenda. Dawn excursions and stargazing at night leave the middle of the day free for sessions, which matches the desert's rhythm well.
  • Caveat: altitude and dryness. San Pedro sits at around 2,400 meters, and the geysers and high lagoons are far higher. Build in a gentle first day, keep everyone hydrated and ask attendees with health concerns to check with a doctor.

Best time for a corporate retreat in the Atacama Desert

The Atacama is a year-round destination, but the most comfortable months are roughly March to May and September to November, with warm days and cold, clear nights. January and February can bring the so-called Bolivian or altiplanic winter, when summer storms in the high country sometimes close roads to the geysers and lagoons. June to August is winter: days are mild and sunny, but nights drop well below freezing and dawn trips are very cold. Chilean holidays around New Year, Easter and mid-September's national holidays fill hotels.

Corporate retreat venues in the Atacama Desert

Hotel Cumbres San Pedro de Atacama

A five-star hotel in San Pedro with two meeting rooms that its events page says hold up to 120 people. It is the most practical base in town for a larger company meeting or incentive group that needs real meeting space.

Hotel Kimal

A hotel built with local materials such as clay, wood and cane in the historic center of San Pedro, with its own restaurant, the Kimal Relax wellness center and a space that can be booked for events. It suits small and mid-size teams that want to walk everywhere.

explora Atacama

An all-inclusive lodge just outside San Pedro where accommodation, meals, airport transfers and guided hikes, bike rides and horseback explorations are bundled together. explora also runs a corporate travel program, and the lodge suits leadership retreats and incentives that want a fully guided experience.

Hotel Diego de Almagro San Pedro de Atacama

A hotel on Toconao street run by DA Hoteles, a Chilean chain that offers event salons and an events team across its properties. It is a straightforward, value-minded option for groups that need rooms in one block.

Budget and planning notes

The Atacama's main cost drivers are the two-flight journey via Santiago, the choice between all-inclusive lodges and town hotels, and private guides and vans for each excursion. All-inclusive lodges look expensive per night but bundle much of the program. Prices rise at New Year, Easter and Chile's September holidays, and park and community entrance fees apply at many sites. Offsiteio trips start from about $999 per person depending on destination, with flights quoted separately. Atacama Desert corporate retreat FAQs

Where should our team stay in the Atacama Desert?

San Pedro de Atacama is the base for nearly every trip. Choose a central hotel for walkability or a lodge on the edge of town for space and an all-inclusive program.

How do we get to San Pedro de Atacama?

Fly to Santiago, then to Calama, and drive about 1.5 hours to San Pedro. Plan on a full travel day from the US.

Will altitude be a problem?

San Pedro is at about 2,400 meters, and some excursions go much higher. Plan an easy first day, save the highest trips for later and let attendees know in advance.

How many days should an Atacama offsite be?

Three days is the minimum to work and see the highlights. Four or five days allow better acclimatization and the high lagoons.
